First question: What the heck is a Schwarzbier? Second question: Why shouldn’t I fear this weird sounding beer?
Well for starters, a Schwarzbier is also known as a Black Lager, so this weird sounding beer also has a not so strange name that you may have heard before. But even if you haven’t heard of, or tasted a Schwarzbier before, it is a style of beer that is worth getting to know. Black Lagers are a great hybrid of a darker style beer like a Porter and a light, crisp Lager, making them easy drinking but with the “roasty” and bold flavors that are more commonly found in dark beers.
Schwarzbier translates to “black beer” in German and is one of the oldest continuously brewed beers in the world. Although it is not as well known in the United States, it is slowly gaining notoriety in the growing craft beer scene among breweries and craft beer drinkers. This style of beer is a winner among dark beer drinkers and lager lovers, so it makes for the perfect brew to share among friends or take to a party.
Our latest Schwarzbier, named “Don’t Fear the Schwarzbier”, has an ABV of 5% and an IBU of 22. It is brown in color and light in body, with notes of roasted malts, light chocolate, and lager yeast in it’s aroma. We brewed this beer with Pilsner, Munich, and Caraffa 2 malts, as well as Hercules and Perle hops and the water profile of Southern Germany. Don’t Fear the Schwarzbier has notes of herbal hops, chocolate, and a light roasted flavor that finishes dry and crisp with subtle hazelnut flavors that linger on the palate.
This beer is perfect for anyone who wants an easy drinking lager, but with a bit more flavor and depth. It drinks like a crisp, clean lager which is great for Summer, but incorporates some of the roasted and chocolate flavors that we miss during the warmer months of the year. This beer will be available at our Flagstaff locations starting August 20th, so give this style a try and don’t fear the Schwarzbier.
